Malta Air Traffic Services (MATS) Ltd. is a registered limited liability company that provides Air Navigation Service Provision (ANSP) to the Maltese FIR. (even called UIR). Its origin dates back to 1979, when the British forces left Malta, and the Maltese authorities took over the ports including air traffic services.
With the Government of Malta as the main shareholder of the Company, MATS assumed control of all air traffic, technical support services for all the CNS infrastructure, and also provision of AIM services within the (FIR) as from 1st January 2002 in accordance with the Air Navigation License granted by the Civil Aviation Directorate of Transport Malta (TM-CAD). MATS is a completely independent Air Navigation services organisation, it is regulated in line with EU rules by the local aviation regulator TM-CAD, under EASA. It is also an ATCO Training Organization.
As from the same date, MATS also assumed responsibility for all assets previously owned and operated in the provision of ATC and ancillary services. MATS is also certified under the provision of SES as “providers of communication, navigation or surveillance services”
MATS provides air traffic services to commercial and military aircraft, flying in the Malta Flight Information Region (lower & upper), a delegated airspace, Search and Rescue services, terminal and aerodrome services for the Malta International Airport. It also provides Aeronautical Information Services and is certified as an ATC training organisation.
As an organization, MATS has a fully-fledged Safety, Quality and Security Management section which ensures that al the MATS management systems are managed under the Integrated Management System. The same section manages the regulatory compliance of the organisation internally and with external stakeholders.
MATS is an ISO 9001-2015 certified organisation.
Besides being an active member of the Blue Med FAB, during the last years, MATS has successfully ventured, into projects, amongst them TEN-T, Horizon 2020, SESAR, and local R&D initiatives.
The year 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of MATS as a limited Company, an account that was made possible thanks to an enduring workforce
